Special Tuning
For the past 20 years I've been tuning a little-known but fascinating system for a select few clients who have requested it. As far as I know (please let me know if you or someone else you know does) I am the only tuner in Canada who tunes this system. It's called the Twelve True Fifths tuning. Developed over 50 years ago by a woman named Maria Renold, this tuning system is based off of C at 256Hz, and A at 432Hz rather than the standard 440. But not only is the whole tuning slightly lower; it also does not follow the standard equal temperament; a compromise to which western culture has been so long accustomed. Rather, all the white-note 5ths are pure and un-tempered (beatless) as are all the black-note 5ths. There are also 2 "Formed 5ths" created (Bb-F and B-F#) with the F# being the geometric centre of the C to C octave. Further, the octaves created are not pure, but very slightly wider. Thus, this system is similar but distinct from Pythagorean tuning. Each key therefore has its own unique characteristics. The philosophy behind the Twelve True Fifths tuning is based in mathematics as well as more esoteric and cosmological principles, but the true test of its worth comes only in listening. It is commonly believed that the human body is more attuned to these frequencies and that the sound is less edgy, more grounding and sonorous. Aesthetically it expands the possibilities of musical enjoyment with its distinctiveness of key centres, diverging from the convenient but bland equal temperament ratios. If this interests you in any way and wish to explore further, please let me know. I'd be happy to go into further detail with you about the concepts and possibilities behind the Twelve True Fifths tuning system.
